Justice Datuk Dr. Hj. Hamid Sultan bin Abu Backer, is an Honorary Fellow, Middle East Institute (MEI), National University of Singapore; an Honorary Visiting Professor of Damodaran Sanjivayya National Law University (DSNLU), Visakhapatnam, India; Adjunct Professor in International Islamic University Malaysia and Multimedia University (MMU) and also Panel Advisor in Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM); a barrister and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. His doctoral thesis was on Civil Procedure and Justice. He is also a graduate in Economics and holds an Honours as well as a Masters degree in Insurance, Shipping and Syariah Law from the University of London. He holds a Post Graduate Diplomas in Islamic Banking and Finance and also in Syariah Law and Practice (IIUM).
He has written about one thousand judgments which cover most areas of the law. He has authored books on various subjects including Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Conveyancing, Islamic Banking, International and Domestic Arbitration and on other areas of commercial law. His books are not only widely used as text books in all institutions of higher learning offering law but also by all who are involved in the practice and administration of law in Malaysia.
YA Dato’ Dr. Hj. Mohd. Na’im Hj. Mokhtar, aged 51, is a Malaysian citizen born in Kg Baru Kuala Lumpur. He is married to Datin Hjh. Nik Roslini bt. Hj. Raja Ismail and blessed with three children. YA Dato’ Dr. graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). He also obtained Masters in Laws (LLM) from University of London United Kingdom, a Diploma in Syariah Law and Practice from IIUM, a Diploma in Administration and Islamic Judiciary from IIUM and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Syariah from National University of Malaysia (UKM).
YA Dato’ Dr. is currently presiding as the Judge Syariah Court of Appeal Malaysia. Prior to his elevation to the post of Judge Syariah Court of Appeal he had served as the Chief Syarie Judge of Selangor and Director of Family Support Division (BSK) at the Department of Islamic Judiciary Malaysia (JKSM) and a Syariah High Court Judge for the state of Selangor. He was chosen and served as Malaysian Cheavening Visiting Fellow at Oxford Centre For Islamic Studies, Oxford University, United Kingdom for 2008/2009 and as Visiting Fellow at Harvard Law School, Harvard University, USA for 2012/2013.
YA Dato’ Dr. has been awarded Prof. Adjung from UiTM for session 2016 to 2018. YA Dato’ Dr. has been appointed as the committee member of the Malaysian Consultative Council For Islam 2016 to 2018, Muamalat Specialist Committee for Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia 2016 – 2018, committee member for Reviewing and Upgrading Law of Syariah Court Evidence 2016 – 2017, committee member of the Syariah Court Practice Direction, Chairman of the Hakam Rules Committee 2015 – 2017, chairman of the Syarie Lawyer Committee 2015 – 2017, Chairman of the Syariah Court Rules Committee 2015 – 2017, Committee member of Islamic Affairs for State of Selangor, and member of Selangor Falak Committee. Apart from this YA Dato’ Dr. also has been appointed as a member of Malaysian Qualifying Agency (MQA), member of National Islamic Council of Malaysia, member of “Focus Group On Enforcing Maintenance”- Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) and Industry Advisory Panel for International Islamic College (KUIS). In year 2012, YA Dato’ Dr. has been appointed as Adjung Professor in Law Faculty, UiTM and IIUM from 2018 until 2019 and also visiting lecturer at UKM, IIUM, and Multimedia University (MMU) from year 1998 until now.
YA Dato’ Dr. has participated in many local and international seminars on his subject areas of specialization. He had also presented papers on family laws, shariah subjects and related topics at many conferences local as well as overseas forums. YA Dato’ Dr. Na’im also sits on a number of Shariah Advisory Boards of local and foreign Islamic banks and takaful companies such as CIMB Islamic Bank, Salihin Trustee Bhd, Sun Life Insurance and American and British Investment Bank (Mauritius). YA Dato’ Dr. is also invited as special guest for the live broadcast in IKIM Radio program entitled Dari Hati Kita Berkongsi Mencari Solusi.
Dato Tan Yeak Hui, is retired Judge of the Malaysian Industrial Court. He is a pioneer and champion in the promotion and use of mediation and other forms of ADR in Asia Pacific Region.
He was a key to the introduction of mediation in the Industrial Court. Since retirement, he has taken on numerous roles and positions. These includes honorary secretary of the Asia Pacific Mediation Forum, Vice President of the Asia Pacific Peacebuilding Centre and external examiner of PhD thesis on various ADR for the International Islamic University of Malaysia. Presently, he is active in the establishment of a number of specialized organisations namely, the Asia Pacific Mediation Centre as a center for the resolution of disputes in the Asia Pacific Region by subject experts, Industrial Justice Institute of Malaysia for the resolution all types of industrial disputes.
Dato Tan has also rendered his services on a consultancy basis to a few organisation including the Papua New Guinea Judiciary.
Justice Leiataualesa Daryl Clarke is a graduate of the Australian National University and the University of Canberra. He was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor to the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory in 1998. He practiced both in government and private practice in Canberra Australia.
In 2002, Justice Clarke returned to Samoa and joined the Attorney General’s Office as Principal State Solicitor leading the Attorney General’s office Civil Team’ responsible for Constitutional, Commercial and civil litigation. In 2003, he was appointed Assistant Attorney General.
In 2006, Justice Clarke joined his wife Fiona in private practice and practiced law in the full gamut of legal matters, both commercial and criminal. In January 2016, he was appointed to the District Court and in December 2016, the Supreme Court.
Justice Clarke has a passion for the important role of NGOs in small communities. He was Vice President of the Samoa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vice President of the Samoa International Cricket Association and President of the Samoa Cancer Society for many years.
Judge Talasa Sa’aga is a Judge of the District Court of Samoa. She is currently the Principal Family Violence and Family Court Judge.
Judge Sa’aga graduated from USP with an LLB degree and post graduate diploma in legal professional studies. She has a Masters in Business Administration from Deakin University Melbourne Australia.
Before Joining the bench, she was the Assistant Chief Executive Officer and Legal Advisor for the Development Bank of Samoa. Judge Sa’aga was an Accredited Mediator and was part of an IFC Co training team under Professor Nadja Alexander. She was also the former Chairperson of the Continuing Legal Education for the Law Society and remains passionate about mediation and training for lawyers and mediators.
